A Cultural Champion comes to visit

"I wholeheartedly support what you are doing" Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones (The Black Farmer)We live in an area of limited ethnic diversity. According to the 2001 census, only 1.25% of the population of the former County of Devon were non-white (Devon, Plymouth and Torbay). This amounts to just 6,611 people. Since then, the situation has improved somewhat to about 1.9%.

So Devon people are losing out on our entitlement to diversity. We're missing an insight into other cultures, religions and histories that children and adults in London, Birmingham, even Bristol, take for granted. Voices from other cultures are simply not heard - in our schools, our workplaces and our communities. Until now that is.......

A Cultural Champion comes to visit What is a Cultural Champion?
A Cultural Champion is a Devon resident from another culture or religion, who comes into the classroom (or other space) to give pupils an authentic, personal view of their culture.
In this way, Devon children and Devon adults can learn about other cultures and people that live here, broadening their minds and breaking down barriers.
